Mardo Tashi Choling
Monastery
Mardo Tashi Choling Monastery is located in the Golok region of Amdo, Eastern Tibet. Built more than two
hundred years ago, it is one of the four main branch monasteries of Katok Monastery, the oldest of the six 'mother' monasteries of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, the oldest school in
Tibet.
The monastery complex contains places for both study and practice - the shedra and the gomdra. The shedra is a monastic college. Opened by Chamtrul Rinpoche, Mardo Tashi Choling's shedra is based upon the study of the most important texts found within the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The gomdra is a retreat centre, where retreatants remain in solitude, free of distractions, immersing themselves in their practices.
