Larung Gar Buddhist Institute

Founded in 1980 by His Holiness Jigme Phuntsok, Larung Gar started off as a few earthen walled meditation huts, but quickly grew into the size of a town. Housing over ten thousand monks, nuns, and lay people studying and practicing the Dharma, it became the largest Buddhist institute in the world.

Its profound influence stretches far and wide, and it's renowned for producing some of the most eminent scholars in the recent history of Tibetan Buddhism.

Larung Gar

Despite its population, and its sprawl of a few square kilometres, Larung Gar sits in a remote valley in Kham, Eastern Tibet.
